About NewForUs

NewForUs is a free, independent guide for people who have recently moved to the United States. It exists because the information you need on your first day here is spread across dozens of unrelated government websites, almost all of them written in legal English.

How we source information

Every procedure described here is traced to an official source: a federal agency, a state department, or a court. We link to that source rather than paraphrasing it, and we record the date each link was last checked. When a rule differs by state, we say so instead of describing one state as if it were the whole country.

What this site cannot do

We cannot tell you what to do in your particular case, review your documents, or contact any agency for you. Immigration and tax questions in particular turn on details that only a licensed professional who has seen your file can judge.

NewForUs explains public procedures and links to official government sources. It is not legal, immigration, tax or medical advice, and we are not affiliated with any government agency. For decisions about your case, consult a licensed attorney or accredited representative.

Report a broken link

If a link is broken or a procedure has changed, please tell us — corrections are the most useful contribution anyone can make to this site.
