Questions from readers
Real questions people ask after arriving, answered against the official sources.
These are questions readers actually asked, answered by hand and checked against the government sources they cite. They are not a discussion board: each answer has one author, a date it was last checked, and links to the official page it comes from.
Can I get a driver's licence without a Social Security number?
In many states yes, but the rule differs by state and the document you need from Social Security is not the one people expect.
Do I have to carry my immigration documents with me?
Yes — carrying proof of registration is a legal requirement for most non-citizens aged 18 and over, and it is separate from registering in the first place.
My children are on Medicaid. Does that count against me?
No. Benefits received by your children are assessed against them, not against you — and this misunderstanding keeps more families uninsured than any actual rule.
My sponsor signed an affidavit for me. Will they have to repay benefits I use?
For some programmes yes, and it is enforceable in court — but the list is shorter than most people fear and several major programmes are excluded outright.
The hospital sent my bill to collections. Is it too late to ask for help?
No. Charity care can usually still be applied for after a bill leaves the hospital, and medical debt in collections has protections ordinary debt does not.
Will a traffic ticket affect my immigration case?
A parking or speeding ticket almost never does — but you will still be asked to disclose it, and two specific offences sit in a different category entirely.
My employer asked for a specific document for the I-9. Are they allowed to?
No. Choosing which documents to show is your right, and demanding a particular one is unlawful — it has a name and a place to report it.
The Marketplace says I must prove my immigration status or lose my plan
You have 95 days, the clock is already running, and coverage really does end — but it can be restored if you send the documents late.
I moved to a different state. What has a deadline?
Four clocks start the day you establish residency, and two of them are tied together in a way that catches people out.
Can I claim a child or parent who lives abroad as a dependent?
Only if they live in the U.S., Canada or Mexico — and even then, being claimable and being worth a tax credit are two different questions.
I have good credit in my home country. Why does nobody here accept it?
Credit histories do not cross borders, and the fix is not to wait — it is to start a specific kind of account.
The school says my child cannot start until the vaccination records arrive
In most cases they can start anyway — provisional enrolment exists precisely for this, and for some children immediate enrolment is federally required.
Someone is charging me to fill in my USCIS forms. Is that allowed?
Charging for typing is legal. Charging for advice is not, unless they are a lawyer or accredited — and there are two questions that tell you which one you have.
My landlord asked about my immigration status. Can they do that?
Federal fair housing law does not turn on your status, and a threat to report you for complaining is itself unlawful retaliation.
I was injured at work and I do not have papers. Can I claim anything?
Safety and wage protections do not depend on your status at all, and most states pay workers' compensation regardless of it.
