Reader question

The Marketplace says I must prove my immigration status or lose my plan

You have 95 days, the clock is already running, and coverage really does end — but it can be restored if you send the documents late.

Last updated August 16, 2026

This is a data matching issue, and it is routine rather than an accusation. The Marketplace could not match what you entered against federal records, so it is asking you to document it.

It is also on a deadline that has already started, and it is the deadline rather than the request that causes the damage.

The clock

  • 95 days to confirm citizenship or immigration status
  • 90 days to confirm income

The notice states your own date. Count from the notice, not from when you noticed it — these arrive by post and in the online account, and the postal copy is frequently the one that goes unopened.

If you miss it, your coverage ends. Not the subsidy alone; the plan.

Why it happens to people who did nothing wrong

Names transliterate more than one way. A document number was entered with a letter O instead of a zero. Your status changed recently and the federal database has not caught up. A recently approved employment authorisation card can take weeks to appear. None of these mean you did anything wrong, and all of them produce this notice.

What to do

Upload rather than post. The online account gives you a confirmation that the document arrived, and post gives you nothing — with a 95-day clock and no acknowledgement, "we never received it" is unanswerable.

Send the document the notice names, not the one you think is equivalent. If you no longer hold that document, send what you do have and call the Marketplace to say so, rather than sending nothing.

Keep the proof

Save the confirmation number, the date you uploaded, and a copy of exactly what you sent. Marketplace records and your own records disagreeing is common, and the only thing that resolves it is your copy.
